Large format printing opens up a world of possibilities that standard office printers simply cannot match. From stunning canvas art that transforms a living room to custom wallpaper that brands an entire office, large format technology produces vibrant, high-resolution prints on virtually any substrate at sizes from A2 all the way up to building wraps spanning dozens of metres.

What Is Large Format Printing?

Large format printing refers to any print output larger than A2 (420 × 594mm), typically produced on wide-format inkjet printers capable of handling rolls up to 1.6m, 2.5m, or even 5m wide. Modern large format printers use advanced ink technologies, UV-curable, eco-solvent, latex, and dye-sublimation, to produce photo-quality output on an enormous range of materials.

Technology Overview

Ink Type Best For Indoor Lifespan Outdoor Lifespan
Eco-solvent General signage, banners 3-5 years 2-3 years
Latex Wallpaper, fine art, retail 5-7 years 3-5 years
UV-curable Rigid substrates, industrial 5-7 years 3-5 years
Dye-sublimation Fabric, soft signage 3-5 years Not recommended

File Preparation for Large Format

Resolution Requirements

Large format prints are viewed from further away than desktop prints, so resolution requirements are lower:

Viewing Distance Recommended DPI Example Application
Under 1m 150 DPI Canvas art, wallpaper
1-3m 100-150 DPI Posters, foam board displays
3-10m 72-100 DPI Banners, building signage
10m+ 30-72 DPI Building wraps, billboards

Colour Mode

  • Always use CMYK for print output, RGB files will shift colour
  • Request a colour proof for critical brand colours
  • Pantone spot colours can be matched on request (proofing surcharge may apply)
  • Be aware that CMYK cannot reproduce all RGB colours, neon greens and electric blues will shift

Bleed and Safe Zone

  • Bleed: Add 10mm on all edges (more for very large formats)
  • Safe zone: Keep critical text and logos 15mm from the trim edge
  • File format: PDF (preferred), TIFF, or high-quality JPEG
  • Fonts: Convert all text to outlines/curves

Common File Preparation Mistakes

  1. Submitting RGB files: colours will print differently than expected
  2. Insufficient resolution: upscaling a 72 DPI web image to poster size produces pixelation
  3. No bleed: white edges after trimming look unprofessional
  4. Embedded ICC profiles: can cause unexpected colour shifts
  5. Linked images not packaged: missing images print as low-res previews or blanks

Indoor vs Outdoor Considerations

Indoor Printing

  • Standard eco-solvent or latex inks
  • Wider substrate selection (uncoated papers, delicate fabrics)
  • No UV protection required (unless near windows)
  • Higher colour vibrancy and detail
  • Lower cost per square metre

Outdoor Printing

  • UV-resistant inks essential (latex or UV-curable)
  • Weatherproof substrates: PVC banner, ACM, Chromadek, outdoor vinyl
  • Lamination recommended for extended life
  • Wind loading must be considered for large installations
  • Higher material and finishing costs

Pricing Overview

Large format printing costs vary based on size, substrate, finishing, and quantity. Smaller prints such as posters and foam board panels are the most affordable, while premium substrates like ACM, custom wallpaper, and stretched canvas command higher pricing. Pull-up banners are competitively priced as a complete package including the stand. For the best value, request a quote tailored to your specific requirements, contact us for a personalised estimate.
